How to Start a Side Hustle With Nothing But Your Phone

You don't need a laptop, a big budget, or years of experience. You just need the right moves — and the courage to make them.

When I decided to start freelancing, I had no fancy equipment, no portfolio, and honestly — no idea what I was doing. What I did have was a smartphone, a data subscription, and a stubborn refusal to stay stuck.

That was enough to begin. And if you're reading this right now, it's enough for you too.

Whether you're in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, or anywhere in Nigeria — the opportunities available to you right now, on your phone, are more than most people realize. Let me show you exactly how to tap into them.

Step 1: Pick One Skill and Own It

The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to do everything at once. Writing, graphic design, social media management, video editing — all at the same time. That's a recipe for burnout and zero results.

Instead, ask yourself: what is one thing I can do reasonably well right now? It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be useful to someone else.

Some of the most in-demand freelance skills you can learn or sharpen with just a phone include copywriting, social media content creation, proofreading, virtual assistance, and basic graphic design using apps like Canva.

You don't need to be the best in the world. You just need to be better than the person your client would otherwise hire.

Step 2: Build a Simple Portfolio — Even If You Have No Clients Yet

One of the most common excuses I hear is, "I can't get clients without experience, and I can't get experience without clients." It feels like a trap, but it isn't.

Here's the way out: create your own samples. Write 3 blog posts on topics you know. Design 5 mock social media posts for a fictional brand. Proofread a publicly available article and show your corrections. These become your portfolio.

Use Google Drive or a free platform like Canva or Notion to put them together. You now have something to show people. That's all a portfolio is.

Step 3: Go Where the Clients Are

Clients are not going to knock on your door. You have to show up where they are. The good news? Most of those places are free to access from your phone.

Where to Find Your First Clients

  • LinkedIn — optimize your profile and start connecting with small business owners and founders
  • Twitter/X — follow entrepreneurs in your niche and engage genuinely with their content
  • Facebook Groups — join groups for small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs in Nigeria
  • Fiverr & Upwork — create a profile and start with small gigs to build reviews
  • Your personal network — tell your friends and family what you're offering; your first client is often someone who already knows you

Step 4: Price Yourself Honestly

Many beginners either price too high (and scare away clients) or too low (and undervalue their work). As a starter, your goal is not to get rich immediately. Your goal is to get results and build proof.

Charge a fair beginner rate, deliver excellent work, ask for a testimonial, and use that to justify higher rates next time. This is how the cycle works. Every successful freelancer started at zero.

Step 5: Show Up Consistently

This is where most people fall off. They start strong, get discouraged after a few rejections, and quietly give up. Don't be that person.

Consistency is your biggest competitive advantage as a beginner. While others quit, you keep going. Post content about your work. Pitch one new client every day. Improve your skills a little each week. Over time, this compounds into something real.

I started this blog with nothing but a side hustle dream and a Nigerian work ethic. I'm still building. And so are you — starting right now.

Your side hustle won't go from zero to money overnight. But it will — if you refuse to stop.

So put down the excuses. Open your phone. Pick your skill. Start today.
