How to Accept USD Payments as a Nigerian Freelancer — 4 Methods That Actually Work

As a Nigerian freelancer in Benin City, getting paid in USD is possible but Stripe will ask for extra verification when your volume grows — like full 9-digit ITIN/SSN and readable ID. Here are the methods I use at Oghenekume Digital Hub:

1. Stripe US LLC (My Main — But Requires Extra Docs)

I use a Delaware LLC (651 N Broad St, Middletown, DE) with EIN. Stripe initially accepts last 4 of ITIN, but after volume grows it requires all 9 digits. You need:

• International Passport matching legal name
• Clean home address: No 2 Akugbe Lane, Benin City 300001, Edo, Nigeria (don't mix US Kansas address into NG fields)
• Real ITIN — never use fake SSN ending 2042 or similar — that bans you permanently
• If you don't have ITIN/SSN, contact Stripe Support > Verification > Non-US representative and request passport-only manual verification.

2. Grey — USD Account with MT103

Best for Nigeria to US wires. You get a US account number. When a client pays, request MT103 / Fed IMAD if it delays. My $500 test (Payment ID 1884804433 File 3702) showed you must trace via sending bank if Grey says no record.

3. Payoneer / Wise Business

Quick setup, works with Upwork/Fiverr, lower verification than Stripe. Good backup while Stripe is in "Payouts Paused" status.

4. Direct Paylink

For consulting I use a paylink — $85 strategy session — clients pay via card, I receive via Stripe/Paystack. Keep statement descriptor clean: OGHENEKUME DIGITAL HUB.

Pro tip: Keep business address (Delaware registered agent) separate from personal home address (Nigeria). Mixing them like "2nd AKUGBE LANE + 1801 Main St., Kansas" triggers "Invalid" in Stripe.
